Sacramento authorities are working a gunfire incident that occurred Saturday evening at Howe Community Park just as deputies were dissolving an unlawful assembly of several hundred people.
Before the Gunfire
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were first dispatched to the park just after 6:30 PM on April 18 after learning of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. After that, a follow-up call was made concerning a possible physical fight breaking out at the location.
A law enforcement helicopter scanned the area from the air but was unable to locate the reported altercation. Despite this, authorities discovered that a massive group had assembled at the park without authorization.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Law enforcement personnel worked to disperse the crowd by surrounding the park and issuing commands over loudspeakers telling the crowd to leave immediately. Nearly 15 minutes were spent for attendees to disperse.
While deputies worked to disperse the gathering that between 20 and 25 rounds were discharged. The barrage of gunfire caused mass panic. Law enforcement immediately began looking for those injured.
The Shooting Victims
In total, four shooting victims were located with gunshot injuries. The four individuals — comprising three men and one woman all reportedly in their 20s at the time of the incident — were airlifted or driven to Sacramento area hospitals. Medical teams noted that two were treated for serious injuries, one of the four had moderate gunshot wounds, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.
Sacramento fire crews assisted at the location and assisted with medical triage those who had been shot at the scene.
Physical Evidence
The center of the incident was determined to have unfolded near the Cottage Way corridor near the Home Depot at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Crime scene investigators recovered additional spent rounds along Cottage Way. check here Round impacts were discovered in the metal fencing surrounding the nearby Home Depot. These discoveries confirmed that at least one shooter had been shooting in a southerly direction from Cottage Way toward the Home Depot store. That Home Depot location was placed on lockdown while the scene was active. Crime scene technicians and detectives continued working well into the night.
Suspect Vehicle Located
Reports confirmed via scanner audio indicated that a Kia had been detained in an area within Solano County. Four people were held for questioning. Deputies were en route to collect those detained to bring the suspects back for formal questioning. Video evidence confirmed that two shooters had been involved.
